Statement Of Purpose
The purpose of Riverwood Community Centre (RCC) is: To manage and maintain a community service in Riverwood: To further community development in the Riverwood area.
Philosophy
Riverwood Community Centre believes: All members of the community have a right to deter- mine and control issues which affect the quality of their lives. As a part of this process, people have a right to participate in decision making in respect to issues and services provided to meet their needs. In the facilitation of this process, be encouraging the sharing of community skills, knowledge and resources with members of the Riverwood community.
Outcomes
The outcomes pursued by Riverwood Community are to identify and service needs in the local community. To create, initiate, support and promote activities catering to these needs, thereby encouraging community participation at all Levels.
Centre Management
The Management Committee
The Committee is elected annually and is comprised of twelve people representing the community. The Management Committee meets monthly and is the legal employer, signs all legal documents, is responsible to the Corporate Affairs Commission, NSW Department of Finance, Department of Taxation and the Funding Bodies. They are also responsible for decision making regarding finances, the direction of the Centre, the Centre’s policies, staff recommendations and ongoing evaluation of the Centre work. Management Committee Members include the President, Vice President, Secretary, Minute Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Committee Members.
Sub – Committee
Riverwood Community Centre Sub-committees include Bus Sub Committee, Community Counselor Sub Committee, Festival Sub Committee and the OH&S Committee.
Community Services
Director, Information Service, Volunteer Program, Housing Communities Assistance Program, Central Sydney South Regional Tenants Resource Service. Neighbour Aid, Shopping Services, Family Support, Youth Service, Links to Learning Programs, Community Counselors, Child Sexual Counseling Service, Children’s Services and Leisure Learning.
Special Events
The main special event held each year in October is the Riverwood Community Festival, organised by the Centre with the Georges River Rotary Club. Other Centre events include the monthly car boot sales, craft stalls, celebrations for Christmas, Senior’s Week, Youth Week, Neighbourhood Centre’s Week, plus multicultural events and traditional celebrations.
Centre Facilities
The Building is owed by Canterbury City Council. Facilities include offices, meeting rooms, a small hall, a basketball court, and kitchen. The Centre’s facilities are used by many outside groups for sports classes or training and many other activities run by local groups and organisations.
